The Outsiders Essay

Ponyboy Curtis is a 14 year old boy in the book The Outsiders. The story takes place in the 1960s and the main plot is the differences and rivalry between the south side (soc’s) and the North side (greasers) of the city. If you are born a soc you are blessed with wealth, nice cars, good schooling, and a future in society. But if you are a greaser you are condemned to a life of being poor, having to live of stealing working lousy jobs. Ponyboy and his two older brothers Sodapop and Darryl are greasers and they have a group of friends they do everything with. There is Dallas Winston who is mean and hard and always getting in trouble, there is Two-Bit Mathews who is always goofing around, Johnny Cade, who was beat up by soc’s and lives life almost scared for, his life. One of the most main parts of the story that is specific only in the movie is that Pony’s older brother Soda who is described in the book as the most caring amazing awesome big brother in the world, almost has no effect at all on the movie. Soda, in the movie, is just a good looking boy who just kind of hangs around the gang with no real subplot around him. In the movie the scenes skip along extremely quickly so it’s slightly hard to understand exactly what’s going on (Coppola, The Outsiders). Dally, in the Movie has a lot of scenes centered around him. He also has brown hair in the movie (Coppola, The Outsiders). A few other small instances that occur only in the movie are, Pony’s parents were killed by a train, Pony and Johnny chase rabbits when they’re at the old rundown church, and the movie starts out as Pony and Johnny following Dally around town (Coppola, The Outsiders).
