In the epic poem and movie Beowulf there are a lot of differences and similarities between the two. Can you spot some of the differences that happened in the movie and the book? Well here is some of the things that I spotted out during the movie that didn’t happened in the book. First, the battle between Beowulf and Grendel in the movie they were awake and partying during his attack; however, in the book they were sleep. Second, the battle against Grendel’s mother didn’t happened in the movie, but in the book they actually fought, and he killed her. Lastly, Hrothgar killing himself, because he’s embarrassed and ashamed. In both the movie and poem Beowulf there are a lot of things that are alike and different between them like Beowulf fighting …show more content…
In the movie he killed himself because he couldn’t live knowing he’s the one who caused Grendel’s death. In the movie it says that Grendel is was his son that he had with his mother. The poem stated that Grendel was just a monster and not his son. Before his death in the movie he told Beowulf that Grendel’s mother is his curse now, then he granted him king. After that last statement he jumped out of the building dying instantly. Hrothgar couldn’t live with the embarrassment knowing his only son got killed. In this essay I stated some of the differences out of the poem and movie Beowulf. In both poem and movie Beowulf and king Hrothgar face a lot of challenges. Beowulf fought his battles killing two monsters even though in the movie he fought one that he killed and not the other one who seduced him into giving her a son. Hrothgar faced many difficulties knowing Grendel is his only son and killed himself because he knows he caused his death in the book he is not the father, and Grendel’s is not his son. These are some of the differences I spotted throughout the movie and poem

The Beowulf poem is a story of a great hero and the great strength he possesses that aids in his fight against the monsters terrorizing the people around him. Beowulf stays strong until his last breath; his grand death will be passed through generation for as long as someone can remember they occurred. However, he is not the only character is important in understanding the society of this time. The poem wanders to stories of other great leaders, some who have fallen. The way Grendel is portrayed in the novel is much more different then he is described in the epic poem Beowulf because Grendel in the novel shows curiosity, has empathy towards others, and wants to be known as a normal being instead of a monster. Grendel’s appearance would scare anyone the way it was described in the book and the poem, therefore it would be reasonable for people to jump to conclusions and assume he’s there to cause havoc. But Grendel appears for different reasons, he’s just curious. In the novel there is a scene where Grendel states “that night I saw men” (Gardner 23).…

Throughout the novel Beowulf, the main heroine, Beowulf, encounters three different monsters that he fights. The main similarities between these three battles is the end result for Beowulf, the people’s need for a heroine, and the monsters themselves. The main differences of the fights are how Beowulf prepared for battle and what he used to fight the monsters, the setting of the battle, Beowulf’s condition during the battle and its result, and why he decided to kill the monster. Though each battle is significantly different and signifies a different part of the book, each battle has strikingly similar components.…

Throughout the story Beowulf is portrayed as a hero of Hrothgar’s community for saving them against Grendel. In the first part of the poem, you do not see any drastic changes in the persona of Beowulf. He is described more through his physical assets and strengths but not so much for his wisdom. In the first fight you can see how Beowulf did not need any weapons other than his brute force.…

Compare and Contrast Grendel Essay At first glance, both Grendel in the novel and in the poem are the same. Both are perceived as to having the exact characteristics in both the novel and the poem. Though, going in depth, Grendel in the novel compared to the poem in Beowulf has a major difference in ways that Grendel in the novel gives more understanding on his perspective in life, Grendel in the novel wants companionship, and Grendel in the poem is showcased as a ruthless, evil, and cruel character. In John Gardner's novel, Grendel is regarded as a monster who gives more perspective in his life, and readers are able to go in depth into the monster's views and what he believes.…

Specifically regarding the poem, when Beowulf goes to seek out the troll-wife, “Nigh unto a day he endured the depths” (990) For a complete day he held his breath which seems superhuman, giving him an advantage over others. In the movie it becomes apparent to the audience that Grendel is Hrothgar’s son with the troll wife, and that the dragon is Beowulf’s son with the troll wife. The same reason that Hrothgar was so sure that Beowulf was lying about killing the troll wife, is because he too was seduced by her and committed the same sin that Beowulf did. The only difference is that Beowulf fought the dragon himself, which is his monster. Beowulf dealt with the consequences of his own actions, as opposed to Hrothgar who is a coward and asked others to fight his monster.…

In the film for example, King Hrothgar commits suicide, there is no evidence in the text supporting this. The film implies that Beowulf takes interest in the queen, while in the text there is no evidence of any romantic interest among them. This line from the film shows Beowulf’s interest, “Me It's not me he wants, my queen” (Memorable Quotes for Beowulf (2007))? The film states that Beowulf not only had an affair with Grendel’s Mother but also had a child with her. In the movie Beowulf marries the queen after Hrothgar’s death and eventually cheats on her similar to how Hrothgar did.…

Both Beowulfs have different views of the world because of major cultural differences which is due to the fact that there is a major time difference in the making of both works. Also Hollywood’s version changed some of the characteristics the characters to fit some our understandings of culture in modern times. Beowulf is more human like and more likely to be real than godly. At the beginning of the movie, Beowulf goes to deal with Grendel just as the epic’s version of Beowulf does. Later on Beowulf begins to feel sympathy for Grendel when he learns more and more about the so called beast; something that epic Beowulf does not feel.…

    Duality In Beowulf

The cultures reflected in the Beowulf epic (Heaney) and the modern movie, Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarrson,) are different in the sense that in the epic, objects are simply either evil or good. Throughout the epic, Beowulf and his motives remain the same. Similarly, the cultural values of the Anglo-saxons remained steady and unchanged compared to modern society’s and its ever-changing views. Since the movie was made in modern times, script-writers added extra elements so that viewers could be able to relate to the characters and their values. In Beowulf and Grendel, Beowulf first exhibits the same type of attitude towards simplistic duality that is in the epic.…

In the movie and poem, Beowulf offers to fight Grendel himself after explaining that he owes Hrothgar a favor because Hrothgar helped his father. In the poem; “Beowulf’s last battle”, he wants to be remembered as strong. Beowulf stated that he never knew fear, as a youth, he fought in endless battles but now that he is old he will still fight and seek for the fame. Meaning, he undergoes a lot of battles back then and now that he is old, his age won’t stop him from fighting. However, in the movie; he becomes more of a monster when he turned on himself by not being courageous when he needed to be, by allowing Grendel’s mother and succumbing to his weakness of beautiful women he causes a fire-breathing dragon to attack his land.…

“Beowulf” is one of the oldest and most legendary tales of strength and valor. It only makes sense that this story would eventually be adapted by Hollywood into a film. Despite the story being as engaging as it already is, the most recent film adaption strays far from the epic poem. These changes affect the characters, themes, and plot. Though both the poem and the film are good on their own, the film’s meaning does not stay true to the original story it pays homage to.…
