It all started with one voice and one person to start the revolution of change. Now change isn’t always smooth and especially during that time there were challenges that everyone in politics had to face if they wanted reform to occur. In the destiny of the republic James Garfield before he was nominated for president started to become the voice of change for the republican party. As well as during his presidency he became the voice of change with his style of leadership. His style of leadership that tried to have everyone's opinions heard and to talk to as many of the people that visited his office as he could. He wanted to unite everyone and have everyone be equal no matter who they are and where they came from. As shown in the Destiny of the Republic when he “[vows] to go as far as [he] can to keep the peace” and “that he had never before walked away from a fight and he was not about to do so now.” That he ‘had fought everyone from hardened canal men to unruly students to Confederate soldiers and he knew that whether he liked it or not he now had another battle on his hands.” He had the battle of reform on his hands and unlike other presidents he was prepared to fight for reform. Though it may be someone's way of life it presents many challenges along the way.The main challenge for many is finding the people who believe in the same things as you, and figuring out what it is that you really believe in. As shown in Destiny of the Republic by the character Charles Guiteau, he lived for a while in a place called oneida. He didn’t agree with their and their religion in general he had his own beliefs that he was better than them. He didn’t believe in how they all had to work as he found it “tiresome and demeaning” as well as he also claimed that he “[worked] directly for god.” He also didn’t like the method of criticisms at Oneida and he was often the one being criticized. All of these quotes show the challenges of religion because they show that not everyone believes in the same thing so sometimes it is hard to figure out who agrees with you and they also show that sometimes it is hard to find what you believe in and who else believes in that. They show how sometimes you can believe in parts of a religion but not in the whole of it as all of them at Oneida believed in god and gods just like guiteau but they also believed in the criticisms and the teachings that he didn’t believe in.
