The Stolen Children Theme

Imagine sitting in the back of a kidnapper's car restrained with no plan for escape. This was the exact situation with Amy, the main character of the book and the three year old little girl she was babysitting, Kendra. For the six days she was stuck with two men, smokey, and Hugh, kidnapped, and lost, with no escape or any kind of plan to escape. The book Stolen Children by Peg Kehret, published in 2008 is a fiction, Action packed, modern American book. Stolen Children is a book filled with mystery, and action. When a simple job of babysitting turns into getting stolen and finding a way to escape. There can be many themes that go along with this book, but, the one theme that made most sense to me is to believe and be confident in yourself. Critics often argue, that the book Stolen Children is just a book about kids that get stolen and then returned back to their families. Admittedly, Stolen Children is about kids that get stolen and then returned back to their families, however, there is much more meaning to the book then just kids getting stolen. For example, on page 42, it notes, “While Smokey was filming her, Amy would scratch one ear and then the other, and next she would give the clue.” In other words, Amy was believing this plan to give a clue to the two families, would work and she was being confident in that and doing everything possible to find a way out. Another example, showing the theme is believing and being confident in one’s self is on page 156, the book states, “Kendra began pounding the horn over and over, as Amy waved her arms over her head, she ran back and forth besides the car, hoping the movement would attract attention to the helicopter.” Meaning, Amy was doing everything she could think of to get help or even attention so she could be found, showing that Amy and Kendra were both confident and believe in themselves to do everything in there power to try to be found. The Last example of showing a meaningful theme, is on page 164, the text adds, “I’m so proud of you, Amy’s mom said, You dad would be proud of you, too.” This text is showing how Amy was confident and believed in herself she was rescued and brought back home safely. All in all, it is clear to see that the book Stolen Children is captivating is because it contains a meaningful
