The Theory of Reasoned Action and Planned Behavior can successfully explain the phenomenon of predicting health related behaviors. This theory was originated by social scientists Martin Fishbein and Icek Ajzen in the 1970’s while trying to establish a bounding relationship between attitude and behavior (Hayden, 2014). The Theory of Reasoned Action and Planned Behavior maintains its success when applied to real life situations because of the core constructs that explain the influences shaping our decisions when taking part in a health behavior (Hayden, 2014).

An individual’s existing attitudes, community’s subjective norms, one’s volitional control, and a person’s behavioral control are what make up the Theory of Reasoned Action and Planned Behavior (Hayden, 2014). Influences such as varying attitudes, subjective norms, volitional control, and uncontrollable behaviors all effect the intention of participating in a health behavior (Hayden, 2014). This theory proves to have many uses in the health field such as changing health behavior like smoking, diet change, or exercise (Hayden, 2014). The Theory of Reasoned Action and Planned Behavior maintains its success when applied to real life situations because of the major influence of intention towards behaviors that shapes our decisions (Hayden,
