In The Time of The Butterflies the book, like the movie is about four sisters who are set out to change the way their country is set up. During this time the Dominican Republic is dictated by Rafael Trujillo, also known as El Jefe, who to everyone around them is a man who needs to be worshipped and respected. All the sisters exhibit courage in their own way and take part in a revolution that are shown individually in both the book by Julia Alvarez and the movie directed by Mariano Barroso.
Throughout the book the points of views vary within the sisters but in the movie the whole story was told in Minerva`s perspective. Although Minerva was like the head of the group, each sister had their own story to tell which contributed greatly to the revoltion. In the book each chapter is in the eyes of a …show more content…
In the movie Dede is only showed when Minvera asks Patria to take care of her children but in the book it shows her internal conflicts, how she is the thread that holds the Mirabal family together and how she tries to keep them alive for as long as she could. Towards the ending of the book it also shows Dede finally breaking away from Jamito`s control by standing up to him, which shows how much she has changed. "Her life had gotten bound up with a domineering man...Dede sent Patria a note: Sorry Jamito says no...what is it you want - to get yourself killed, too? i nodded. I said 'I want to be with them" (pages 177 and 308)
In both the book and movie Minerva is protrayed as an exceptionally courageous and outspoken character. In both the beginning of the book and movie, Minerva is shown trying to free a rabbit from a cage which foreshadows and symbolizes her efforts to try to free her country from Trujillo`s regime. Even though the movie focuses more on her this similarty is important because it developes the stories
