Students are required to remain focused to receive instruction to obtain the best education possible. Often students find it difficult to concentrate. These students are often diagnosed with
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). People with ADHD have trouble focusing, controlling their behavior, and sitting still or being quieter than other people the same age.
Doctors prescribe these students with a drug called Ritalin. Ritalin is known for its use, abuse, side effects, and the controversies concerning this drug.
Ritalin is a prescription drug that is used to treat children, adolescents, and adults with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Ritalin is …show more content…
Ritalin works to enable individuals with ADHD to concentrate, improve memory, be better organized, and make better decisions (Moore 73). Ritalin’s classification is a central nervous system stimulant (Methylphenidate 1). Ritalin works by increasing dopamine levels in the brain. The beneficial effect is achieved by slow and steady increase of medication in the way that dopamine is naturally produced in the brain (Drug Facts 2). Findings in neuroscience supports the dispute for prescription drugs to treat the assumed at “birth defect.” This study showed that children with an ADHD/ADD diagnosis have different patterns of neurotransmitters in their brains (Sroufe 2). Dosage should be monitored by a physician. Research showed that students who received a daily dose of Ritalin, their symptoms of ADHD declined more than those that did not take the drug (Bower 1). Ritalin’s effect last for three to six hours. This means that it has a short life and does not collect in the body. This means that frequent doses of two to four times a day may be required. Ritalin is available in a sustained release form that can be used solely or in combination with a faster acting form to reduce frequent dosing (White and
