The Use of Setting in “The Masque of the Red Death” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” Edgar Allan Poe is an American author who is known for his use of romantic and gothic style of writing. “The Masque of the Red Death” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” are two famous pieces of literature written by Poe that are still red and studied today. Known for his intriguing plots and characters, Poe’s use of detail in his writing always has a deeper meaning and provides the reader with extra insight into the story. Poe also uses atmosphere to model specific details in the setting. The red death is a disease that spreads quickly and kills people throughout the fictional country the story takes place in. The Prince of the country, Prospero, is nervous about the effect of the red death and locks the doors to his castle to fend off the disease and protect his life and other upperclassmen. Prince Prospero throws a celebration with the people inside the castle. For his celebration he paints the seven rooms in his house different colors. The story starts off in the blue room then goes through the purple room, green room, orange room, white room, violet room and then the black room. In the black room, “Red Death had come like a thief in the night” (Poe, “Masque”). The fatal disease came into the castle and everyone felt sick, including Prince
