The story follows a young boys, Huckleberry “Huck” Finn, travels through the American south during the 1830s or 40s. It begins in the fiction town of Petersburg Missouri where Huck has been placed under the guardianship of a lady that goes by Widow Douglas. She attempts to civilize the extremely untamed Huckleberry, an act which he does not respond well too. Huck’s best friend, Tom Sawyer, aids him in sneaking out one night to meet up with his gang of “robbers.” Huck begins to get bored of these actives, just as this happens his father Pap, an alcoholic, abducts him. The main reason Pap wants to abduct Huck is to acquire the fortune he obtained prior to the start of the story. Pap has Huck in a secluded cabin in the woods. After a while of being held captive Huck escapes by faking his own death. After his great escape he settles on Jackson’s Island. It is here that he reunites with a runaway slave of Widow Douglas named Jim. Jim is attempting to make his way to the town of Cairo, Illinois so that he can purchase the rest of his enslaved family. At first Huck is handed with a major internal conflict, he knows slavery is wrong but at the same time it is against the law to aid and abed a runaway slave. After time Huck and Jim develop a close relationship, with Jim even becoming a guardian to Huck. A heavy flooding of the river occurs and the two stumbles upon a raft as well as an entire house floating down the river. After entering the house they find a dead man who was shot in the back, Jim will not let Huck view the dead body. The two are later separated by a fog. Once they reunite Huck tricks Jim to think that he dreamed the entire incident. Jim is not tricked for long and gets very upset about being teased, Huck becomes very remorseful and apologies to his friend Jim. Close to the Arkansas- Missouri border the
