In McDonagh’s The Pillowman, Katurian and Michal’s parents are the flat characters. Both of them are solely presented through Katurian’s narration, by using different voices like imitating a boy’s voice (which in text is marked in the brackets) in order for audience to distinguish him from his mother. Although Katurian’s parents are not dynamic, they play the key role to show Katurian’s affection towards his brother Michal. As their parents torture Michal, it triggers Michal to write Katurian a paper slip about his childhood tragedy, saying “they have loved you and tortured me for seven straight years for no reason other than as an artistic experiment”. (McDonagh, 2003) Katurian eventually know the reason why there is always muffled scream burst out from the room next to him. Despite the biological relationship between him and his parent, Katurian’s desire to save his brother Michal from the torment generates his motive to kill his biological parents. Katurian’s murdering is considered not only as an illegal but also immoral act, but his love towards Michal still hatch him braveness to overstep the morality, as he thinks saving his brother is more important than to merely consider the morality. All of this is stemmed from the word
