While waiting for the train they only got the usual ration of bread. Since the train took so long the arrive all the inmates were hungry and had to start eating the snow. Once they train arrived, they put a hundred per car. While they were in the train they got no food. For instance, Elie states, “We received no food. The Nazis treated them like animals or worse. They get them to the camps and make them leave their belongings that they had brought behind and they got rid of their names. To illustrate how he couldn’t take many objects, Elie says, “The beloved objects that we had carried with us from place to place had been left behind.” (pg. 29) This represents that the objects that they could bring in a small backpack, which is not a lot of things, they had to leave behind. All of their things they worked hard for they just had to leave forever. They also had to get rid of their names. Elie says, “I became A-7713. From then on I had no other name”(pg. 42). They got rid of their names and called them by numbers. This is not a way to treat humans at all. It takes away their true self, their identity. Finally, Elie saw something that he was not supposed to. When he looked over he thought, “I moved closer and had a glimpse of Idek and a young Polish girl, half naked, on a straw mat”. “They brought down a crate”. After he was caught the Idek said, “Lie down on it! On your belly!” I obeyed. I no longer felt anything except the lashes of the whip.’’ (pg 57).
