Strategic
Haley, Milan, Madanes, and the Mental Research Institute (Gehart, 2014).
A power based role. The therapist needs to be able to take control and be active (Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences, 2018).
Families cause issues and don’t know how to properly solve them. Behavioral changes need to be made to solve issues (Gehart, 2014). This theory is mainly used for at risk youth (Killam & Webber, 2013).
Figure out what the problem is first, then put in a plan that will start change. Be direct and use circular questions and also address power struggles. Change and relabel unwanted behaviors …show more content…
This model focuses on fixing behavioral issues and doesn’t take into effect emotions that can cause conflict as well; its strictly behavioral.
Structural
Minuchin, Aponte, Lindblad-Goldberg
Stay active, stage enactments, and question family assumptions, help facilitate mapping boundaries, promote change (Gehart, 2014).
This model is change oriented. It focuses on changing the structure of the family to solve issues within the system. It looks at the dynamics of the family and makes structural changes that alleviate what causes the issue (Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences, 2018).
Join and accommodate other family members. Establish boundaries and hierarchies and make them clear, transform the structure to eliminate things that cause the problem (Gehart, 2014).
“Restructure the family, realign boundaries and hierarchies to promote growth and resolve problems” (Gehart, p. 125, 2014).
Short term
This model is only used within the immediate family system, meaning mother, father and siblings. It doesn’t address issues between generations or with other family members.

Satir.
Facilitate communication and growth, look for suppressed feelings that hinder growth (Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences, 2018).
With this model the focus is on emotion, communication, and growth. Humans have the innate drive to make themselves happy and fulfilled (Theories of psychotherapy, 2018). People naturally want to grow (Gehart, 2014).
Assess family history and homeostasis stage, focus on growth and teach effective communication, restructure the family and provide closure (Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences, 2018).
The goal is “to achieve optimal realization of a person’s full potential” (Gehart, p. 175, 2014).
Can be long or short term.
Transformation is relative. Its hard to measure transformation and growth when it would be different for everyone. The level of growth will be different with everyone in the system once the end goal, homeostasis, is met, so not everyone may benefit much.
Contextual
Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy
Create a holding environment (Gehart, 2014).
Families have a ledger of entitlements and indebtedness, this causes tension in the system. The contextual also assumes family members feel an obligation to the family system, feel invisible loyalties, split loyalties, and legacy which can also all lead to tension in the system (Gehart,
