Moral Courage “I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live up to what light I have.”(Abraham Lincoln). Many people can say they have done heroic deeds but not many can say they have shown moral courage in the face of a struggle when no one would do what is truly the honorable thing to do. Moral courage is present in many stories. In To Kill a Mockingbird and The Sword in the Stone through symbolism and theme. The theme for both of these text are, always do the right thing even when you stand alone. In To Kill a Mockingbird the main symbol used through this book is the mockingbird and how it is gentle and kind and harming it in any way is a sin and wrong. In the passage many men try to remove the sword but none succeeded until Sir Arthur comes along and removes the sword unknowing declaring himself king of England. The sword is a symbol of moral courage because it shows us that only the bravest of all and the righteous among the entire country can be king and stand up for what is right even when no one else would just as Sir K did when he was asked if he had pulled the sword out of the stone and he truthfully replied no and announced that his brother Sir Arthur had instead pulled the sword out. The passage uses theme when Sir Ector took in the young Sir Arthur to be his son when he knew times were very dangerous for the young prince and he raised the boy up as his own with no knowledge of his true destiny and what he was meant to become. This shows moral courage because it displays an act of bravery knowing that if the boy was found with Sir Ector they all could be harmed but he still continued to protect the bo and give him an normal life with a family that loves him as if he were their
