1. Atticus says that Mr. Cunningham is basically good but has blind spots like everyone else. What does Atticus mean? How is Atticus different from the men at the jail at night?
Answer:
Mr. Cunningham is a hard-working man who struggles to get by every day. He doesn't rely on government assistance and he always pays back whatever he takes with many other ways other than money. “Little cash he made went into interest…came from a set of breed men…had no money to pay… they simply paid with what they had.” Mr. Cunningham was one of the men that showed up at the jail to give his not so nice regards to Tom Robinson. When the dogs starts walking towards Atticus we see him using a skill that not many know he is capable of. While Atticus is pulling the gun up the kids sit and wait patiently not knowing what Atticus is doing because they think he is kind of a chicken. We all know that Tom is innocent based on the evidence, but we still are on the edge of our seat because his fate is in the juries hands. “Judge Taylor was pulling the jury…I peeked at Jem his hands were white from gripping the balcony…his shoulders jerked as if each guilty was a separate stab.” They are the ones with the power to determine if he gets to walk or not. It was like sitting there watching Atticus being handed a gun with no bullets, and every time he goes to pull the trigger nothing happens, in this case he is trying to kill the case but has no bullets to do it with. Overall, the outcome of the trial was different than the outcome of the dog but in the end Atticus still remains true to his
