When the Wall Street crashed and the Great Depression began. It was the start of a strong influence on women's fashion in the 1930s. Because of the need to save money, the average woman could no longer buy new clothes every few months. Instead, they had to remake the clothes they already had, reusing any material that was on-hand. Women's 1930s fashion was characteristically long and sleek. The flapper look of the '20s was now out, and a more sophisticated look, which was influenced by Hollywood movies, was in at the time. One of the outfits Ginger Roger’s wore, was a suit, which was a popular style for women to wear in the 1930s. My favorite outfit that Ginger wore in the film was the ostrich feather dress in the song, “Cheek to Cheek” because it was elegant looking and fit the musical part.

Formal attire was worn throughout the film on sets that took up the bulk of the budget and studio sound stages. These Big White Sets, as they came to be known, represent the Streamline Modern end of the Art Deco spectrum. You can see the scale of Art Deco in the rooms' high ceilings along with many neo-classical motifs, but the materials, modernity, and sweeping lines of Streamline Modern are also famous throughout. The luxurious textiles and their textures in the rooms and clothes were particularly the sparkle and shine of silk and satin are also pure Art Deco. It is no wonder why the Depression-era theater audiences were so in awe with this
