School Counselor Roles

Introduction/Overview Chapter 7 in The Transformed School Counselor written by Carolyn B. Stone and Carol A. Dahir solely focus on Coordinators, Collaborators, and Manager of Resources in School Counseling field. There are three main roles for the school counselor that would greatly benefit the school, teachers/faculty, community, and more importantly, the students. These roles are Coordinators, Collaborators, and Managers of Resources. Coordinator is to organize and manage your time as a school counselor and setting up the priorities between yourself, school and community. It’s extremely important to coordinate all that as a school counselor or you’ll most likely get lost and overwhelmed by the student caseloads and never-ending agenda. Having a role as collaborators would be beneficial in this type of career because it could ease your agenda and caseload. It’s recommended to collaborate with both internal and external communities so they could be your “eyes” outside of the office. Also, they could help with the programs that would reach to the school’s common goals. School counselors have multiple roles to ensure that students are getting the benefits and increase their educational opportunities as well. Alongside with achieving the school’s and program’s common goals. Coordinator, Collaborator, and Manager of Resources roles are considered as common roles and learned through our previous experiences in work, undergraduate program, volunteering, and so on forth.
