Fences is a play written by August Wilson whose setting can be traced back to the middle of the 20th century (Broadbent, Guiles, 2013). The central theme addressed in this game is racism and African-American interaction. The main character in the play Fences by August Wilson is Troy Maxson, who is a black man in his early fifties. Throughout the play, Troy exhibits traits that paint him both as a villain and a hero.
Troy is seen as a character who portrays negative ambitions and values to every person. He succeeds in blocking people out of his life. Through his evil habits and selfish ambitions, he blocks Bono, his best friend, Rose, his dearest wife and Cory, his son, out of his life completely.

It is 18 years since the two got married. However, Troy happens to have been involved in a relationship with another woman called Alberta. Despite Rose having been the best wife somebody like Troy could have ever had, he still goes ahead and impregnates another woman. He shows disrespect of the highest order for the sacredness of marriage. Marriage is a covenant in which two individuals, colloquially man, and woman, agree to stay together, and to remain faithful and supportive of each other even in the most enticing circumstances. Rose tries have remained loyal to Troy for 18 years, but Troy has ended up disappointing her. Furthermore, instead of Troy apologizing for his mistakes in a responsible manner, he arrogantly tells Rose how it "feels right" when he visits Alberta's house later he cannot give up seeing her. This trait portrayed by Troy is meant to diminish the dignity of women by perpetuating their total submission to men even when men have made mistakes that require punishment or
