In the time period of 1840 until 1900 Japan and China were both subjected to western imperialism, but they reacted in different ways. Japan was able to adapt to imperialism much better than China was by changing their economy and government. They abolished feudalism, and in order to become more western, they created a new army and industrialized their economy. China on the other hand, was suffering from many internal conflicts, so it was not difficult for Great Britain and other western countries came to claim parts of China for trade purposes. The peasants in China did not want foreigners controlling trade, and rebelled against their government.…

The Meiji Six Society were a group of intellectuals in 1873 who advocated in the belief of promoting enlightenment and civilization through observing Western influences throughout the world and introduce them into 19th century Japanese as a means of becoming more modernized; such efforts involved sending students and samurai alike to study abroad in the Iwakura Embassy. 19 February 1942. A total of 365 days have passed since the Japanese bombing of Darwin. Our now heavily populated thriving city of Townsville has transformed drastically from our once only main hub of Flinders Street. Many of us repeatedly question the Japanese and their motives behind their desire to bomb our golden country. Without a doubt, Japan has one of the strongest and loyal approaches to imperialism.…
After World War I, the United States adopted a policy of isolationism; neutrality became the prominent factor in foreign policy. The United States felt that it was safe in its position in the world and wanted to uphold the status quo, a reflection of the attitude of President Roosevelt, who saw no use in war at the time. Even after the invasion of Poland, which led to the start of World War II, the United States remained neutral and wary of war, passing a system of cash-and-carry arms. This showed that the United States stood with democracies, but was not ready to be fully involved with the war. Though the United States continued to remain on the sidelines, the prospect of war was quickly becoming inevitable.…

A question that can make you think and wonder for hours. History composes an important part of these countries, and when we look back at the history of China and Japan, any small changes in past historical events could have led these countries to a much different place than they are now. During the era of Meiji Japan, Japan opened its doors and became influenced by societies like Europe. In Sanshirō: a Novel by Natsume Sōseki, Japan became influenced by Europe’s ideas of individuality and humanism. The people in Meiji Japan believed and accepted to a great extend the European narrative of the Enlightenment of humanism, people being seen as a human who determine their own destiny, individuality, which meant people do what is in their self-interest, people were logical and rational to do things that benefited them, and innovation of new technology and ideas. As Professor Eacott discussed in the lecture on October nineteenth, creation and 6 innovation can be done in other ways more than education. However, the history and narrative…

Japan may be a small country who had a small role in the outcome of World War 1, but they still managed to do quite a bit for the Allied side, and when it came to the Paris Peace Conference, they had many demands. From helping Russia to demanding equality, their help will not be forgotten by those affected today. On August 15th, 1914, Japan sent Germany an ultimatum; evacuate Tsing-tau, disarm the warships, and hand the territory over. When Germany blatantly ignored their requests, war was declared on August 23rd.…
Few other monarchs in world history presided over such a crucial period for their country as the Meiji Emperor of Japan. Few lived through such dramatic changes and fewer still managed to master such changes and successfully direct them to the benefit of their country as a whole. Emperor Meiji did all of these things. Born into a land of feudalism and isolation, very advanced in traditional ways but which had fallen increasingly behind the rest of the world in others, Emperor Meiji presided over the end of Japanese isolationism, the end of the shogunate and the restoration of power to the monarchy, a period of rapid political, economic, military and educational modernization and the rise of Japan to be the preeminent regional power of East…
As two neighboring countries, both of which containing exceedingly complimentary economics and societies, it seems absurd to many that Japan and China continue to struggle with relations. However, few know of the historical backgrounds, political relations and bilateral economics that have led the countries to have such an intricate relationship. Japan and China have many things to gain from a proper alliance, and under the administration of Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the two could achieve this alliance. This change could pool their resources together, and create a sounder economy that benefits both countries. However, this requires that Japan stays true to its constitutional word and China to forgive the country and acknowledge Japan’s…

In the period from the Tokugawa era to the post-WWII era, Japanese society saw a dramatic shift in the prevalence of Japanese militarism and the existence of the traditional Japanese war mentality. Deeply rooted in samurai culture, Japanese militarism served as a foundation for Japanese society throughout the Tokugawa era; the class system gave way to a ‘warrior-elite’ class that dominated the social hierarchy. This pervasive warrior-dominated culture persisted into the Meiji period. Japanese militarism escalated further during the 1930s, leading to what many consider to be the height of the Japanese military state: The Second World War.…
