As explained before, it shows that Luis is a troublemaker. He’s rude and disrespectful, and does not care about anything. Luis seems like a bad kid. However, that won’t be the case anymore once he meets Naomi. Naomi reminds Luis of his mother. She lives in a funeral home, which makes Luis think of his mother’s death. “She wasn’t perfect or anything. She had bad days when nothing could make her smile, especially after she got sick. But he never heard her say a negative thing about anyone” (Cofer 239). Here we find that Luis is not as ruthless as he seems. Being reckless and careless was Luis’s way of coping with the grief of his mother’s death.
