One example of this is when, at the auto repair shop, Tom tells Mr.Wilson why his car is not ready to be sold - the mechanic is still working on it. When Mr. Wilson inquires, ¨Works pretty slow, don’t he?¨ Tom replies coldly,¨’No, he doesn’t… And if you feel that way about it, maybe I’d better sell it somewhere else after all¨ (28). This shows that Tom is taunting Mr. Wilson and Myrtle because he knows they need the money, but he is holding power over them by teasing Mr. Wilson with the sale of the car. The wealthy continue to try to use their money to get rid of problems rather than take responsibility for them. Whenever a celebrity gets in trouble for doing something wrong they just pay a fine instead of learning their lesson and going to jail like most people. Evidence of this is when Justin Bieber partisipated in an iligal drag race while under the influence. He was charged with the serirous crime of Driving Under the Infludnce. Instead, he pleaded guilty to lesser charges and had to go to anger managment class and had to make a $50,000 donation. Gatsby and Bieber both got out of going to jail by paying money.
Throughout the book, Fitzgerald uses Daisy and Tom to represent the upper class by how they treated people, how much they loved their possessions and how they never took responsibility for their actions. Daisy and Tom in the book never treated anyone very nice. They love their possession and love to show off everything that they own and when Daisy something super absurd she hides and lets another person clean up and also to allow Gatsby to be shot instead of confessing to hitting Myrtle.
