In this essay, I will consider the topic of vegetarianism from the perspective of environmental concerns that are often associated with the production of meat. In the article, Vegetarianism and Planetary health (2000), Michael Allen Fox states that strict vegetarianism ought to be adopted in order to avoid the eco-destructive nature of the livestock industry. Although there may be some truth to Fox’s initial premise which claims that eating meat is harmful for the environment, I will argue that strict vegetarianism is in fact unnecessary, as it does not exclusively solve the issue of ecological destruction. I will aim to expand on Fox’s claims in order to establish that it is better and more viable to adopt a ‘Demi-Vegetarian’ diet as described…

When it comes to Global warming, being a vegetarian should be turned to as a first resort rather than going more toward the Prius, a car that has been made to cut vehicle emissions in half in an attempt to fight against global warming. Kathy Freston’s article “Vegetarian is the new Prius” caught my eye immediately when choosing an essay for the very fact that, I want Toyota Prius, and also because I’ve tried going vegetarian. Although I see nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, the lifestyle just didn’t work for me. I do to a certain extent agree with her argument because ever since I took ecology in high school, the environment has been very important to me, and I do what I can to help preserve it. Freston wrote that President Herbert Hoover promised a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage”.…

In “Save the Earth, Buy Less,” Jared Blumenfeld points out, “Americans have become deeply addicted to consuming. If it’s cool, if it’s trendy, if it’s shiny, we buy it” (par. 6). In today’s brand conscious world, everyone likes to buy new things in order to look modern and more fashioned. In my opinion, this concept is destroying society by increasing: personal debt, poverty, and unemployment. Furthermore, this concept is also time wasting because everyday people go to the stores and they spend hours in there, just searching the products that are on clearance, which they don’t even need.…

The locavore movement is rapidly gaining popularity around the United States. Communities that adopt this program include people that have decided to consume locally grown or processed foods. These citizens have chosen to join this program in order to support local farmers, become more energy efficient, and eat more nutritiously; however, communities should look at all perspectives of locavorism before rapidly involving themselves in it. Although the locavore movement is not necessary to living a healthy lifestyle and buying food solely from local farmers threatens the livelihood of farmers around the world, it also implicates positive economic growth and healthier citizens for participating communities.…

Roughly 3-4 percent of the U.S. population is vegetarian. Whether or not people should consume meat is a very debated issue. Most people in the world do eat meat, but there is a faction of people who are of the opinion that it is better to live off of a primarily plant based diet. While vegetarianism has many benefits, an omnivorous lifestyle doesn’t have to be detrimental to the environment and can be as healthy as any other diet.. Vegetarians’ main argument is that a no-meat diet is healthier, greener (better for the planet) and less cruel.…

“While the term ‘consumer society’ is often used to describe a broad set of historical changes that have given a new prominence to consumption within modern social life as a whole , it typically retains a critical charge, implying there is something fundamentally problematic about a way of life in which individuals derive their primary sense of meaning, satisfaction, and selfhood from the purchase and use of commodities.” (205, Soron). It is in human nature to pursue things that bring them happiness. The media seduces us with their numerous advertisements, causing us to crave purchasing the goods shown, making us believe it will bring us happiness. Once you buy one of these goods, you only come into possession of short term happiness, because in a limited period of time there will be a newer model available.…

What I think it means to american is that we are diverse and different than any other countries. This idea and its examples are the symbols of freedom that thousands of Americans, not just soldiers but citizens too, have fought for years to preserve and prefect. Unlike other countries, this country is made up of immigrants. Everyone’s ancestors worked hard to get to this country – whether boat or plane. Many of them started with nothing and worked their way up in society because they could.…

Laughter has been said to be the best medicine of all. This medicine, however, cannot cure the effectiveness of an argument and instead can be seen to poison it in some cases. In Laura Fraser’s “Why I Stopped Being a Vegetarian,” Fraser depicts personal incidents of dabbling in vegetarianism and uses this to assert that people should not be vegetarian and instead decrease the amount of meat consumed. Though humor may then seem to be the appropriate method of conveying her opinion, it is often detrimental towards her argument because it causes her ideas to seem nonsensical and often apathetic towards those who wholeheartedly believe in vegetarianism.…

One of the most predominant characteristic of the contemporary societies is the free flow of the information. This, along with social changes, together with the growing importance of culture in society, have created the need for a better understanding of how culture is related to economic and social life. The concept of "culture" is the subject of numerous theoretical studies both in marketing and sociology and other human sciences. I started from an overview of the concept of "cultural consumption" in the academic and scientific sphere, showing in the first part of the work the approaches and theories of cultural consumption, concentrating after that on a set of directions for generating results and possible interpretations.…
