The eery painting by VIncent Van Gogh called The Night Cafe conveys a sense of self-seclusion through the slumped figures at the tables full of wine or beer, and the lone figure standing behind the pool table staring directly at the onlooker. Gogh uses important details in the painting, one was the skewed perspective he incorporates, it gives an onlooker a feeling of drunkenness or delirium. Furthermore the colors depicted are all contrasting which makes the painting contribute even more to delirium. However, even with the details on the parts of the painting, the title gives us some clues on loneliness, it is called The Night Cafe which communicates that it is quiet and lonely. The certain parts of the painting all work together but in a…

Van Gogh created many self-portraits over his short career but this one takes place in January of 1889, shortly after van Gogh cut off part of his own ear. It is uncertain why he did this to himself but it may be due to his mental issues and an argument with fellow painter Gauguin. Gauguin had been living and working with van Gogh in the Yellow House but left in late December 1888, around the time of this incident (Courtauld). It is believed that van Gogh gave the piece of his ear that he cut off to a prostitute leading many to believe that he was psychotic (Khan). In this painting, van Gogh appears to be still and in thought.…

Van Gogh uses color in a very deliberate and effective way in The Night Café. He selects the colors not based on his visual interpretation of the room but on the psychological and emotional effects it has on its occupants. He explains to his brother Theo, in a letter, that he uses the red and green in an attempt to express the terrible passions of human nature. The use of these colors helps to illustrate the intensity of the Café de la Gare and provoke the emotions of the viewer who may relate the bar scene to alcoholism or depression. He also balances the wooden browns and yellows of the lower half of the painting with a dark wooden clock adorned with a vibrant yellow face at the top of the painting.…
