flashback, metaphor, and allusion. A flashback is a device by which an event or scene taking place before the present time in the narrative is inserted into the chronological structure of the work. Meyer uses this in the essay when she writes “A teacher approached me after class a few weeks ago. “Did everyone seem a little bit distant today?” he asked. Yes, we had”. She uses this specific flashback to support her argument that technology is making students distant in the classroom and since the teacher had taken it into notice it must be prominent in the classroom.
