The author Wes had to leave his home in Maryland to the rapidly changing Bronx that would later be infested with drug abuse and distribution (38). After becoming settled there he began to change; his grades plummeted and he began to get into trouble more frequently. Leading him to be sent to military school and after being removed from the Bronx progressed for the better (85). Due to him being removed he learned about discipline, respect, and himself than he knew before he entered. He even had the opportunity to play sports and earn scholarships to help offset the cost of his tuition. I experienced a similar situation when I went to New York for a family vacation. It was during Winter Break and we were supposed to be staying for only a week, but with the snow front moving in we extended it two weeks. One day during the first week went to a Mall, but it had Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, and numerous other shops inside. The shops were overcrowded to the point where there was a drastic temperature increase from just walking through the door. I also learned that New Yorker can be very rude at times; one woman all most ran me and my younger brother over with a cart. The author Wes constantly reminds readers that he could be in the other Wes’s position and that there was no deciding factor. However, the Other Wes had opportunities to make the correct choice but elected not to. The first was after he was involved in a dispute with a neighborhood boy, he decided to retaliate by stabbing him even in the presence of a police officer (34). He made the choice of ignoring his friend’s advice to not stab him and ending up getting arrested. Similarly, the author Wes faced a moment in his life when he decided to make the choice of not attending English when he knew he was supposed to (77). As a result, his grade in that class declined and would later be placed on academic probation because of his continued habit of skipping school.
