They created their own hydraulic system of dikes, causeways, canals, and aqueducts, and an extensive system of irrigation channels. The Aztecs were very educated people and knew how to take care of each other. The Aztecs were also mostly vegetarian, because they had such great soil they could plant almost anything. Aztecs had many different classes and one of the important ones was the ruling class. The ruling class controlled most of the goods that were sent to different locations. The Aztecs used the tributary system, with the commercial markets and it dominated their economy. The farmers would bring the essential goods to the central markets, merchants exchanged a variety of good including: rights to lands, slaves, carriers, and luxury items. Like most governments the Aztec had policies they had to follow. The political unit they followed was the city state; to them called altepetl. There were at least fifty city states in the central basin of mexico and four hundred and fifty outside the basin. This devastated their economy because the Jews and Moors held up the middle class. When Columbus came to them and told them about this expedition they had, it made them think about how it could help save their economy. They had other ideas to about converting all the people in America to Catholicism.
The spanish had the same hierarchy like the Aztecs had. Since the Spanish was very intolerant to people who weren't catholics they created the doctrine of limpieza de sangre (purity of blood).
