Thomas Jefferson once said “Educate and inform the whole mass of the people….they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty.” This great man spoke this out of concern that there might come a time when the government of the United States will be too powerful and intrusive. By releasing important classified information, Edward Snowden proved himself a hero by warning the public about the unconstitutional things the NSA (National Security Agency) was doing without the permission of the public. Snowden uncovered shocking secrets that the leaders of our country tried to keep hidden from the people. He believed people had a right to know what the government was really doing, so by putting himself and his freedom at risk, Snowden released sensitive information that made many question their freedom. The Times wrote “When someone reveals that government officials have routinely and deliberately broken the law, that person should not face life in prison at the hands of the same government.” Snowden was charged with three felonies, conveying classified information to an unauthorized party, disclosing communications intelligence information and theft of government property. A recent court ruling declared the NSA’s surveillance system was unconstitutional, which “highlights lights the irony of the government prosecution of Snowden.” The NSA got a slap on the hand while Snowden became the worlds most wanted man.
