In high school, some teachers did not assign homework every day. In college, that is not the case. For example, my French professor assigns homework every night. There were times during my high school career where I went home and did not have any homework to do that night. I was stress free. In college, I find myself checking canvas daily, and checking due dates constantly. Even if an assignment is not due the following day, a student may have to spend more than one day on an assignment or essay or they will find themselves procrastinating. Procrastination is a terrible habit learned in high school. High school homework assignments are easier, shorter and students may be able to finish the assignment or study for the test the class before. For example, my roommate has a tendency to procrastinate. “I have a 12-page paper due Thursday and I haven’t started”. She is giving herself less than a day to write a 12-page essay. Not only is the requirements for the essay different from high school, but she is going to find herself awake late hours of the night. Procrastination is a student’s worst enemy in college. Learning how to balance their schedule properly, will determine their academic success. Students no longer have their classes back to back, as if they were in high school. Many students find themselves having breaks between their classes. Will a student study between those gaps, or will they find themselves taking a nap? If a student has a job, participates in a sport or club, a student may find that their schedule is packed. Michelle Garvey says in her article, “Making the Most of First Year” “Life is about to become extremely busy. Whether it is trying to find time to study while partying five nights a week or trying to juggle work or family while studying, organization will be your best friend”(51). Freshman have a tendency to struggle managing their time and organizing their schedule. Nothing is impossible. However, if a student does not balance their schedule, students may become stressed and overwhelmed. In high school, everyone had the same schedule, the bell rang at the same time, if you participated in a club or a sport, students would meet after school. In college, that is not the case. Everyone has different schedules. If students are meeting with many people, it must work for everyone, meaning that practice could be at 5:30 in the morning. The meeting for the club could be at 9 o’clock at night. What if a student is working? What if a student has class?
