The film emphasizes the importance of gender roles in the Pleasantville where the breadwinner and disciplinarian of the house must be the husband while women should assist her husband and children, and cook dinner and welcome her husband whenever he comes home. As a perfect world in the 1950’s, parents come home early before dinner, nationalism was strong, and women must act in a ‘ladylike’ manner. On the contrary, people in the 1990’s have more freedom to everyone’s expression and choice where women wore jeans and men wore informal outfits.
