Instead it teaches useless information about things like celebrities for instance. These celebrities are used to endorse items, keep the audience glued to the television, and using social media. (Adorno, T. & Horkheimer, M., 1944) Theodor Adorno, a member of The Frankfurt School, thought deeply on this idea. He believed that leisure time was to be spent for the betterment of the soul, for one to grow in new ways, gain a new insight, and become inspired. He argued that leisure time was being consumed by mass culture- which Adorno would call “The Culture Industry.” He said that modern media seemed to be designed as a distraction from one’s true self. Leisure time had become toxic due to the media- what was once a time to thrive, had become solely for entertainment. He said that modern media is designed to keep us entertained and distracted, subconsciously confused, and ultimately as abiding citizens. People still read, they work on themselves, they go to the gym, it is undeniable. Media is simply a means of an escape for the occasional entertainment craving. People want to get away in their leisure, they do not want to be so consumed with their own lives so often that they do not step out of their bubble. It is a good thing to watch a movie sometimes, to be distracted from all the hate and crime this world holds, and focus on the beauty of a story.
Once the hate and crimes of this world are truly understood, and the invisible prison is revealed, pop culture undeniably becomes meaningless. Why would one want to go to a movie about monsters and aliens while the real issues in the world go ignored? Modern media generates laziness, fixing the issues heard on the news is not even a thought in the solution, a crime on the news is just another story. There is no will to alter reality, as it is accepted. Making humans simply consumers to the entertainment the media has fed
