This causes whites in America to have an overwhelming control of power and resources, which enforces their unearned privileges and the oppression of people of color. White supremacy is maintained in four ways in the US. One way white supremacy is supported is by the increasing number of killings of unarmed African Americans by white police officers; this can be looked at as a parallel to when blacks were enslaved, castrated, whipped, maimed, and lynched, which was used frequently in the South as a method of policing the activities of African American men from 1880-1950. Juries denying the humanity and victimization of blacks also help to maintain white supremacy, since the jurors are mostly whites in most trials they share the same views of blacks that the police officers that are trial have, which severely minimize the chance of the officers being indicted.…

However, whiteness is just as much of a race as any other, yet we continue to ignore the fact that being white is conceptually the same as being black, Hispanic, Muslim, or what have you. This idea is called white privilege and it is based on the social construct that gives white people an advantage, socially, over all other races. Whiteness is constructed in such a way that it is often seen as a default and the norm and is subsequently, basically invisible. Yet, if we can’t see it, then how do we know how whiteness exists as a race or how operates and affects people?…

This systematic racism deep-rooted in the core of this country hindered the progress of colored people, harbored white superiority and created white privilege. Since its establishment in 1776, America has always been viewed as a predominantly white country.…

White privilege is a topic that is always existing and has for a period of time, but it is not talked about that often and actions are not taken against it. This issue is difficult to diminish because the majority of people that are in authority are most like to be caucasians who are in that position thanks to the power of white privilege. It has cause many problems and caused many cases of unfair of treatment anywhere from inside a personal household to a community, to the society, and all the way to the institutional level, and can be the source of systematic discriminations as far as to the federal government and to the supreme court.

A lot of them want to disagree it since they think that all it means is that they didn’t work hard for what they earn and everything they have was given due to the color of their skin. All it means is they are the dominate racial group in America, they are represented in the media better than other racial groups. Hence, they are not discriminated against in institutions since they have majority of controls. It’s important to study whiteness because its plays a major impact on how this world is operating and how it’s segregated. To study whiteness allows us to acknowledge the abuse of power the white race has created by racial hierarchy within society. In the article “Representations of Whiteness In Black Imagination” by Bell Hooks she explains, “A system of domination, imperialism, colonialism, and racism actively coerce black folks to internalize negative perceptions of blackness, to be self hating ” (p.19). The false history and lacks of knowledge about people of color can lead to self-hating when society makes people believe that being white is better. In America, the concept of “race” has existed for a very long time now. This concept has been “based on false ideas, myths, and fabrications that accumulated over the centuries to form a grand, sweeping story or metanarrative to justify the exploitation of entire populations of human beings[...]” (Holtzman and Sharpe 609). White hegemony has come from these falsities. There are many people in the world that believe that if one’s skin is white, they are automatically better than everyone else.
