To begin, Paul’s motivation to find luck in himself comes from his family’s struggle with money on a day-to-day basis. It is stated several times throughout the short story that the family could hear a soundless whisper everywhere (7). These whispers constantly chanted the phrase, “There must be more money!” (7) which echoed the thoughts and worries of the members of the family. The author mentions that there is also not enough money to keep up with their social position because both of the parents made a low income (3).
