Who Is The Narrator In The Uncomplicated

Shaykh uses the narrator’s relations with other characters to illustrate her character. Near the beginning of the story, the narrator describes how Maryam ties her hair into pigtails and fixes her thick eyebrows, from this short description it can interpreted that this character is a young dependent character. Before her secret meeting with her mother, she reveals that she is uneasy and unsure if she could open up to her mother and overcome her shyness. She explains that she is in control of her emotions, finding herself unable to easily open up in comparison to her sister who is “uncomplicated” and “not a bit worried”. To maintain a facade distance with her mother she tells the reader that she is incapable of showing her emotions to her mother, but as she sees her mother she finds herself throwing herself into her mother’s arms. The narrator’s predetermined emotions were swayed, causing her to return back to her introverted nature. The author portrays this character as a naive character that is easily influenced by her emotions which is shown through her thoughts and actions. When the main conflict is introduced, the reader can depict the protagonist’s inner conflicts, her emotions towards her mother and how her character develops. The way the author portrays the character as a naive girl that struggles with her inner self is what allows the reader to relate with the character. I personally think the author reveals the character in a realistic manner thorugh her My personal connection with this character is that she is constantly being lied to, not just by her mother but also to herself. She doesn’t allow herself to embrace the way she feels but tells herself to feel a certain way. Even though I may not have conflicted feelings toward my mother, I find myself connecting with the character that is
