Who Is The Vincent Van Gogh The Starry Night

Improved Essays
● Vincent van Gogh, The Starry Night, 1889. Oil on canvas, 29” x 36 ¼” (73.6 x 92 cm).
● The left side of the painting, there are a few black lines curving up to the top in a sort of a wave motion. It is unknown what this is but it looks like some kind of plant reaching for the sky. With close observation, the former black curves are actually dark green with a little black and blue.
● The lower right of the painting, there is a small town with houses. It is also recognizable by the lights inside the buildings.
● Behind the town are hills and mountains.
● In the background, it is noticeable that it is nighttime with a starry sky. The moon on the right side gives height to that so it balances with the figure on the left side of the painting.

The tree looks as if it reaching towards the child and it’s trying to absorb the life the child brings to the painting. A student appropriated his artwork in order to modify the original meaning, modernize the work, and display an extravagant view of a New York City skyline. “The Starry Night” and the student’s artwork share many visual evidence qualities such as color, shape, contrast and form. “The Starry Night” utilizes a blue color scheme in order to allude to feelings of sadness. There are many curved, swirly shapes that make up this scene and give the impression of a lively, mobile sky.…

Salvator Rosa, 1615-1673, was an Italian artist from Naples well known for his landscape art within the 17th century (famsf.org). His landscapes often depicted travelers, beggars, peasants, and even bandits in a rough, undomesticated landscape (Allen). One landscape in particular simply named ‘Landscape with Travelers’ painted in 1640 highlights his technique and general story-telling quite well. By using light and shadow he is able to create a message that seemingly need no true narrative as a source of explanation. Rosa used the medium of landscape art to encourage, while simultaneously highlighting, the dangers of travel and the exploration the wilderness (Kosiacka-Beck 266).…
