When I was in middle school, I still remember that I was sitting in my assign seat waiting for class to get started. I decided to have a conversation in Vietnamese with my friend because I was so used to speaking Vietnamese at home. We were both born in California, but our parents were from Vietnam. Therefore, when I was growing up, my parents taught me most of our Vietnamese cultural beliefs and language. As I was talking with my friend, my teacher noticed our conversation and slowly walked to our table. She was really curious on what we were talking about because she was a traditional white teacher. Then my teacher called my friend and me to go out the hall so she can talk to us. My teacher yelled at us for speaking our native language in class. She told us that we must only speak English in this school and especially in this classroom. I felt trapped of my own self because I was not able to express my other cultural
