The church or the state didn 't approve of abortion until the 19th century. The first state that passed it was Britain and then it became more strict throughout the century. The U.S followed individual states that started to outlaw abortion. In 1880 most abortion was illegal in the U.S except the ones that are necessary to save the life of the woman. Literally, having an abortion is mostly done because they want to prevent a child to be born with birth defect problems. They do an abortion since women have been raped or incest and they don’t want to have the baby. One of the reason they do abortion is because they don’t want the child. Sometimes it’s because the mothers have a serious condition and they cannot have the child as it can put the mother in danger.
