For the 2016-17 Band year I am applying for the position of Flag Captain. The past marching season, I worked closely with the two flag captains and I learned a lot about the position and what to expect. Me holding a leadership role in band would work well for many reasons. I like to be in charge and have a handle on situations. I am an organized person and love to have my own input on situations. I would like to hold this leadership role for many reasons. Secondly, with the passion I’ve developed, I could portray it into my work ethic and have guard doing very well

Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

It was also important that the team could work together on and off the field so I often communicated with all the players to figure out any kinks or flaws that would lead to a disruption between my teammates.…

My perspective of what it means to be a man and leader has changed significantly over these past few years. Every aspect that I associated with being leader either came from books that I have read, coaches, teachers, or my family. Most of these people practiced a management style than actually leadership, a quid pro quo approach. In fact that is why I leaned towards coming to the United States Naval Academy. I have read many military stories of great leaders, John Basilone and Jack Lummus to name a few that had the ability to inspire and encourage men to follow them into great success no matter the odds.…
