The Crucible is set around the 1600’s and written by Arthur Miller. The Puritans lived a very harsh but simple life. The puritans had certainly few values at the time, but they treated them as it was there whole life. The majority of their material values were wants not need, unlike today. Puritans were practically all about religion and a bit of drama thrown in here and there.
The Puritans were living a tough yet simple life. They had practically no wants and all the needs, totally unlike today. There needs were basically food, shelter, clothing, and church, and no wants. Today our needs are focused around technology, one example of this is cell phones. Cell phones are definitely a need in America, studies show that 91% of Americans own a cell phone, I think it is safe to say cell phones are a need. An example of this is when Abigail accused other people of ‘witchcraft’ that she did, and eventually 39 people ended up in jail and one hanged. The other 38 who weren’t hanged confessed to save their lives.
This was because they valued church highly. Church was so crucial and essential to them that you could be accused of witchcraft just for not going! If you didn’t go to church on Sunday without an excuse relating to a serious injury and/or death, people would suspect you’re a witch. Let’s say you accidentally skipped church for the sake of sleeping in, after all there were no alarm clocks at the time, suddenly you’re being put on trial for being a witch and if you don’t confess you were a witch you get hung. Just imagine what would happen if someone said God's name in vain or even
