As Katherine Gallagher Robbins, director of research at the National Women’s Law Center, found that in 2014 the median income for full-time male workers was $50,383 versus the $39,621 that women made. The $10,000 estimated loss for women could help immensely, for bills or food. The fact that this money is being withheld from women when they worked to earn it, possibly even more diligently than their male coworkers, is quite significant. This payment system can be based on either workplace bias, women negotiating smaller raises than men, or job choice. Women with young children find jobs that reflect their seniority, but also more flexibility. This can also determine wage pay per gender. This topic will not change overnight, however, everything starts with a baby step. Women are human beings and so are men. By separating them due to gender differences, how is it different than, per say, racism? This is a serious topic that needs to be discussed more. On April 12, 2016, it was National Equal Pay Day. USAtoday.com released an article titled, “‘Happy Equal Pay Day,’ said no woman ever”. Lisa Maatz, vice president of government relations at the American Association of University Women, said, “You can’t negotiate your way out of discrimination”. Even if women earned a higher pay, they would probably not gain any more positive respect from coworkers. Discrimination is a serious topic that is happening all around society
