Construction The memorial is located in one of the most historically significant sites in the US. The monument is located directly behind the Washington monument and right in front of the Lincoln memorial reflecting pool and the Lincoln Memorial. There was a lot of debate about lowering the monument. Many people were worried that it would cause congestion and flooding. The monument is surrounded by quite a bit of wildlife such as trees, bushes and shrubs. All of the plants attract animals like birds and squirrels. This wildlife adds a peaceful feeling to the monument. It helps lighten the sadness that surrounds the memorial giving it a more relaxing feel allowing people to mourn for those who have died in a place of peace. The memorial stands in remembrance of those who fought for peace. And by making the memorial a peaceful, relaxing and welcoming place it honors that purpose. The Idea to build the WWII memorial was first proposed 1995 but became a reality in 1996. The memorial was becoming a serious consideration. In late 1996 the first design competition was held with over 400 competitors. In the end 6 designs were chosen to compete in the second stage of the competition. Among these final competitors was Friedrich St.Florian whose design was finally
