1) Reflective Listening
Communication strategy involving both 1) seeking to understand the seekers idea, & 2) offering back the idea to confirm it has been understood (active processing).
2) Five A's of Behavior Change
-Assess beliefs, knowledge, behavior
-Advise behavior change & education
-Agree upon collaborated goals
-Assist in identifying personal barriers, & finding social support
-Arrange follow up.
3) Exercise Scheduling
Scheduling leads to patterns of habitual behavior, which will increase client efficacy & adherence.
Asking clients to keep a log of their day/wk will help identify times in which exercise can be incorporated.
Teaching clients how to (a) manage time, (b) make contingency plans, (c) proactively create action plans, (d) use stimulus control, (e) & identify other ways to be active.
4) Stimulus Control
Modifying the environment so that it is conducive to making choices that support exercise. This includes removal of inhibiting cues and addition of supportive cues.
5) Rapport
Trust, Respect, & Confidence in a particular person.
-Knowledge, Credentials
-Presentability & Halo Effect
-Similarity & Kinship (Shared Likes, Dislikes, Understanding, Mimizing)
-Empathy & Vulnerability
-Granting Bids
-Affirmation, Appraisal, 5 Lan. Of Love
-Reflective Listening, Appreciative Inquiry, Motivational Interviewing, Personalization of Optimism, Nonviolent Communication
6) Bid for Social Support
Clients may want to express their needs and feelings to significant individuals in their social networks, to make them aware of the importance on exercise and the importance of that individual's social support.
Clients may need to be counseled on how to begin these conversations or identify the type of social support needed.
Social Support includes an exchange of aid or assistance among individuals or groups w/in a social network. Social Support is one of the most consistent predictors of participation. SS comes in 4 flavors.
A) An acceptance or welcoming of beliefs & values. (Reflects a lack of negative moralistic judgement)
B) Material aid (in order to provide opportunity or growth)
C) Education & Information (for awareness & informed consent)
D) Encouragement, Personalization of Optimism, Scaffolding for Mastery Moments
7) Exercising Outdoors
Working Out in Green Spaces may decrease feelings of depression, anger, & hostility; & increase enjoyment and intention for continued physical activity.
