Organizes anti slavery briefly met with opposition in the south and changed positions better left up to the individual or states to decide and their goal was to win better treatment, not freedom. The baptist and methodist were friendly towards freedom. Willing to license black men to preach.

Presbyterian minister appealed to his audience sense of emotion rather than reason. Instilled with fear of satan and an eternity in hell. Could be saved through good works, and a steadfast faith in god. Aka burned over district.
The great awakening , the individual responsible for seeing salvation was emphasized. Need for personal and social improvement.
