Some antibiotics work by targeting the prokaryotic 70S ribosomes. How do they do this?
Name an example of an antibiotic that does this.
They inhibit protein synthesis in some way. Tetracycline is an example, prevents binding of tRNAs to the acceptor site of the ribosome
What is an endospore?
Give example
Endospores allow bacteria to become dormant.
- only certain species sporulate
- cause by starvation, desiccation or other stresses
- once formed resistant to: desiccation, uv radiation, toxins, boiling, osmotic changes. Extremely hardy.
- when conditions are favorable the endospore germinates to form a vegetative cell.
- spores can last decades to thousands of years.
Example: Bacillus anthracis
