Compensation- makes up for a " deficiency " in one area by excelling in another
Denial - reality is denied because they do not like it
Displacement- emotions are expressed toward someone or something other than the source of emotion
Dissociation- emotional detachment from a situation
Indentification - individual incorporates a characteristic of another without giving up their own indentity
Introspection - a quality or attribute of another is internalized and become a part of an individual
Projection- blaming personal shortcomings on someone else
Continued defense mechanism
Rationalization- constructing plausible reasons to justify one's behavior...excuses
Regression- behavior, thoughts, feelings from an earlier stage are exhibited
Fantasy- wishing for things to be different than really are
