Clay particles are released into surface waters by soil erosion.
These negatively charged particles remain suspended in the water for months or years.
The clay particles can impart cloudiness (turbidity) to the water and can also act as sites for bacteria to collect and reproduce.
Clay particles cannot be removed by filtration as the particles are too small they will pass through the pores of common filtration
To remove the clay particles it must aggregate and grow in size.
The aggregation of clay particles cannot occur naturally as the negative charge would repel each other.
