displayed on 9/11. To bring across the message writing styles such as descriptive sentences, diction, pathos, and ethos are used. Initially, descriptive sentences were used to develop Burke’s piece. Descriptive sentences include immense detail to help develop the piece. One example of descriptive is “Now injured and bloodied, the four office workers climbed out from beneath the debris”. This excerpt displays descriptiveness with “Now injured and bloodied” it makes it so the audience can picture four adults battered, bruised, and cut up climbing towards safety. One can picture ruble and a mess of clutter around them as they “climbed out from beneath the debris”. To illustrate, descriptive writing is “breathing dust, they gazed about in the pitch of darkness”. With this, the audience can picture someone gasping for air reaching around helplessly trying to feel for a way out in the darkness. Due to the author’s use of descriptive writing, the audience is…

This is the last set, this is the last set. I stand in the blistering sun with the rest of the marching band on the last day of band camp. Everyone is hot and sweaty as a beaming ray of sun hits our skin. We all have shorts, a tank top, a hat, and a pinning on. I stare at everybody and see them slouched over and eyes drooping like a beagles ears. My sneaker softly touch the concrete ground of the parking lot football field. I snap into focus when I hear a shout at the top of a metal structure.…

By: Eastlyn Koons After re-reading all of the previous stories, I picked the story that had what I thought, the best examples of descriptive writing. Putting all these thoughts in account, I chose“The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. All throughout the story, there is so much description. The first page is a great example. I do not have enough space to put down the whole entire first page but I can give examples. Examples such as, “The flower garden is prim, the house a gleaming white, and the…

The restless storm roared through the icy dull sky. The emptiness of the night was soon filled with the sound of heavy raindrops, as they splattered fiercely on the pavement. It was slightly peculiar, as the rain never fell to this extent in the summer. I was making my way home from school in the city, with my clothes and blonde hair drenched. My last resort was a dilapidated barn I found refuge in –around ten kilometres away from my home the last of the paint chips from the old barn door…

I awoke on the couch the morning at the lake with a cool breeze coming through the house. The fire place has just about burned out with only a small bed of hot coals remaining from a fire the night before. I watched as they flickered and crackled slowly changing color as they begin to change to ash. Above the fire place is a trophy deer mounted with an old hunting rifle right below it. It was a beautiful head piece which had ten points in total five on each side making it almost a perfect rack.…

A shark does not complain about waking up early and tackling the day. A shark is up early doing shark things reminding everyone why they are a shark. My stomach clenched, I felt his hand squeeze my tender skin. “How many rolls you got there buddy? Enough to make a Pillsbury cake?”. My heart sunk, I could not respond to the older boy who had just embarrassed me in front of dozens of my peers. That night, I went home and cried myself to sleep for the first time in my life. At 5’6” and 208…

Frozen. The only thought on my mind, repeating over and over my way through the icy forest. The definition of the word, be turned into ice or another solid as a result of extreme cold, has no real meaning until you are stuck in a wintery forest miles away from civilization. I could feel the word frozen every time a slight, sharp breeze sliced its way through my padded mountain climber suit. The slightest presence of air left my blood and body as rigid as the iron sword of a opulent, medieval…

I tumbled out of bed with a sense of excitement mixed with traces of anxiety. Today was the day where my team would travel to Austin, to compete for a spot in the state basketball championship. Since October, my teammates and I had worked especially hard during the season to get to where we were, and we weren’t about to stop. That morning I woke feeling the day would be invigorating yet stressful, but I would never have expected what was to really happen that fateful day. I grabbed my…
