profit of his wife's ornate garden, Garnet opened Rock City to the public in 1932. Business was slow, however, so Garnet had to find a way to entice visitors to their garden with more advertising than they currently had. Garnet hired Clark Byers to paint farmers' barns for free as long as the phrase "See Rock City" was added. Farmers from Michigan to Texas accepted the offer, and the iconic black and white signs on red barns became part of our American landscape. The advertisement had- and continue to have- a significant effect on the Carters' business; every year, over half a million people see the sites of Rock City, likely having past many of the famous signs on their way to Lookout Mountain. Exercise 1- page 102 The song "The Sign" by Ace of Base tells the story of a woman's realization that she must end an unhealthy, difficult relationship with a loser in order to live a better life. Though the listener does not know what specifically "the sign" is, the singer makes it clear that her new life, unrecognizable to her ex ("you would hardly recognize me") is infinitely better than it was in that relationship. With her epiphany, the singer realized that not only was her ex "not the one for [her]," but her ex was definitely not going to change for the good. "No one's going to drag you up to get into the light where you belong," she says, suggesting that although she sees potential in her ex, no one is willing- or capable- to make him live in "the light. " However, she…

A sign, in a literary sense, is a thing that makes you think of something else without an obvious connection between the sign and object. Codes are a set of ideas, rules, letters, numbers, symbols, etc., that are used to represent another thing. A…

Its pH increases and approaches 7. If we dilute a basic solution, the solution becomes less basic. Its pH decreases and approaches 7 Question 2: acids as hydrogen-ion donors and bases as hydrogen-ion acceptors. Scientists used the new definition to explain more bases, such as ammonia (NH3). Subsequently, bases are proton acceptors, when ammonia was seen accepting an H+ and creating an ammonium ion (NH4+), it could be labeled as a base. If it got the H+ from a water molecule, then the water…

donor. An equation exemplifying an acid dissolving in water is: HCl (g) H2O H+ (aq) + Cl- (aq) A base, based on the Bronsted-Lowry Theory, is defined as a proton (H+) acceptor. An equation exemplifying a base dissolving in water: NaOH (s) H2O Na+ (aq) + OH- (aq) Molarity, also known as the concentration, is represented as moles of the measured substance divided by the volume in dm3. It is a value of the amount of substance in a given volume. The amount of substance is measured…

more extensive and intensive tests should be done to confirm the results. When looking at the Paste pH and Electrical Conductivity Tests, we are looking for an acidic environment and an environment with a high concentration of salt. Specifically, if our site sample has a pH of less than 4, then that indicates that the sample is acidic. If our site sample has an electrical conductivity greater than 2000 μSiemens per centimeters, then that indicates that the sample has a high level of soluble…

has been removed. Washes operate on the idea that adding base and acid to a mixture will draw out the acidic and basic substances contained in that mixture. Acids are defined by their need to donate a proton. Bases are defined by their need to take in a proton. Therefore, adding a strong acid to a mixture would cause the base in the mixture to want to take the protons from the acid8. Similarly, adding a strong base to a mixture would cause the acid in the mixture to want to donate its proton8.…

Since acetic acid is considered a weak acid (strong within the scale of weak acids), there is a range at which the acetic acid and acetate will form a stable buffer. Using the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation for buffers, it’s possible to calculate the pH based on the ratio of acid to conjugate base, or calculate the ratio given the pH and pKa value. Finding charge on a protonated amine: The pKa value given for the amino group on any amino acid specifically refers to the equilibrium between the…
