From its inception, Tropicália’s embrace of Afro-music styles and clothing gave the community an unpresented recognition in popular music. In Tropicália’s birthplace, Bahia, a region previously heavily dependent on African slaves, Afro-Brazilian cultures such as capoeira and Candomble were suppressed. For example, ‘until 1976 Candomble temples were required to register with police and obtain clearance for public festivals’ [Dunn p.167]. Gil’s performance at the Unified Black Movement in 1978 gave a ‘big boost’, according to founding member Léila Gonzales [p.180,Dunn], to a crusade that promoted black social activism against such suppression, particularly with regard to police violence. It was criticized by the regime and its conservative supporters such as Gilberto Freyre as irrelevant to ‘racial democracy’ and rejected by other artists for fear of being associated with a radical movement. The movement was later greatly successful under Sao Paulo governor André Franco Montoro as they ultimately criminalized racism in the Brazilian Constitution of 1988. Also in 1988, Gil took presidency of the Fundação Gregório de Matos (Bahia State Ministry of Culture) as one of the first Afro-Brazilians to take a political post and so further enhanced the positive image of the Afro-community [Afolabi, p.148].
