    animation. However, it’s brilliant character development is often overlooked. Throughout the course of the film, the audience witnesses a change within the two leads, Woody and Buzz. The movie starts out with a sequence featuring Andy (the toy’s owner) enjoying his toys and playing with Woody who is obviously is favorite. This is demonstrated by a center close up of Woody’s face. Later, when Buzz is introduced there is a slow pan that finishes with a center close up accompanied by an impressive music score. This distinction immediately illustrates the difference between Woody and Buzz. When the audience is introduced to Woody, it’s in a gentle way, while Buzz’s entrance is more intimidating. The pair immediately act as foils to each other, Woody being the smart, conservative one who wants to stick to the status quo and Buzz as the brawn, strong one who is misguided. Buzz faces a continuous internal conflict about “ his purpose”. After escaping a near death experience, he realizes Woody’s initial claim is right, he is a toy. This parallels with internal conflict many people face. Once he 's presented with this reality it causes him to fall into a depression and he becomes complacent with the possibility of his demise. He is no longer “Buzz Light Year of Star Command” but, instead is a child’s toy. Woody, assures Buzz that bringing joy to others is a true gift and saves him.
