    Profession brought to light the social injustices and the hypocrisy of women during the time period making it a timeless piece encapsulating serious issues in the Victorian era. There was estimated to be about 55,000 prostitutes in London during the late 19th century and these prostitutes were not always seen as dirty and unholy, but at times seen as “as poor, yet independent, working women” (""The Great Social Evil": Victorian Prostitution."). Prostitutes were normally young women in their late teens who would rather sell their bodies than work in factories or sewing shops. Prostitution was legalized after the passing of the Contagious Diseases Act of 1864, 1866, and 1869 (Shaw). While this legalized the acts of prostitution, it also entitled the police to arrest a woman if they suspect her of being a prostitute and could examine her for signs of venereal disease. This became a matter of public controversy and the era of “The Great Social Evil” was born, prostitution was more and more common and women were able to legally work in order to support themselves. The perception of who a prostitute was began to evolve and William Acton stated that the old idea that a prostitute was someone who was “the dirty, intoxicated slattern, in tawdry finery and an inch thick in paint” began to change to reflect that the women were “generally pretty and elegant” (Acton, 27).
