Red Wolves The Red wolf, scientifically known as Canis rufus, is a close relative to the more commonly known, Grey wolf. The Grey wolf is the one typically used in fairy tales while the Red wolf is not. The Red wolf has a cinnamon or tawny red coat with some grey and black markings. Their back tends to be darker and their tails tend to have a black tip. Red wolves are smaller than their close relatives, the grey wolf, but have longer legs and shorter fur. Full grown Red wolves measure around 4 to 5 feet in length from the tip of their nose to the tip of their tail, with their tails measuring around a foot long. They stand about 2 feet tall and weigh between 50 and 80 pounds. The male Red wolf is typically larger than female red wolves. Red…
The Maned Wolf The legs of a deer, the face of a fox, and the body of a wolf, what is it? The maned wolf is an interesting animal that not many people may know about. It can be described by what it looks like, its eating habits, and its social structure. Despite its name this animal looks more like a fox rather than a wolf and has even been described as a “fox on stilts”. But, this unique looking species isn’t closely related to either. In fact, the maned wolf is the only member of its genus,…

Rick Laakman For 101 Dr. Lee 11/29/15 The goal of Mexican grey wolf recovery program in Arizona and New Mexico is to establish a self sustaining population and eventual removal from the endangered species list. Research into the effects of hybridization with coyotes on red wolf survival Matthew Owen, University of South Wales, UK Introduction and project rationale The red wolf (Canis rufus) is a critically endangered canid species that is endemic to the south-east regions of the United States. Both articles have really good information about and why should we protect wolves. Well, of course, it doesn’t come right out and say it. I think the second passage, “Wolf Family Values” is the article I am picking that has more information about the wolves. Why? You may ask is because, the first article, “Scared to Death” has about the elk and what happens when the wolf population came back. The second text is more about the wolves, and they are all about. “Once upon a time, folklore shaped our…

Environmental groups, such as Defenders of Wildlife, are trying to put a stop to the war on wolves. In a recently launched campaign, Idaho’s War on Wolves, they focus their attention on the recent wolf killings in their state and potential legalization of wolf hunting. Their position argues against wolf killing based from both an ethical and population-based standpoint. Ethically, they show how wolves have in fact been misunderstood by society to the point that they are being sought out and…
Now there are people that are hunting wolves in the state of Michigan for pure sport, and many of the population oppose this. The Gray Wolves have been struggling for 50 years on the brink of extinction. There are now less than 700 wolves in Michigan. The Gray wolf and or subspecies of the gray wolf (the Timber Wolf) has been undertaking many infringements on it’s rights, struggling to stay on the endangered species list instead, being knocked down to just ‘threatened.’(“Michigan.”) After over…
As the famous saying goes, “Bears would be bears”. Okay. That’s not a saying. But whether you like it not, no one would ever dare to stand toe-to-toe with a massive 7-footer, 500-lb, fanged, fury mammal. Even the bravest hunter would rattle in fear when a wild, hungry bear had its eyes fixed directly onto him while in ready-to-attack beast mode. Who would have thought that a fury brown grizzly would tear your apart for lunch? Freaky! But don’t worry folks. No matter how hungry and outrageous…
